Their nonsense? Those lousy 'sales.' My brother was checking Best Buy online every day for a decent sale on one product and it never came. Best Buy had lousy online sales and lousy in store sales. Target was another who seemed to think 'sale' meant they knocked 10 dollars off a $150 dollhouse, for example. They were so convinced (by the false hype) that the economy had recovered, that they got greedy and thought they could make big money without big sales.
The economy has not recovered and they've just blown the biggest shopping period of the year.
That's on them.
And they're still stupid. Shan Li (Los Angeles Times) reports:
Deal-hungry shoppers headed back to the malls to buy what they didn't get for Christmas, as retailers scrambled to woo buyers after weeks of lackluster sales during the crucial holiday season.
The post-Christmas rush is especially crucial this year for merchants who are hoping to make up for lost steam over the last few weeks. Analysts say the final week of 2012 may mean the difference between a cheery or disappointing holiday shopping season.
First off, at some point this week, pretty much every non-coastal part of the US is going to experience (for their area) extreme winter. So that's going to cut into sales.
Second of all, how much money do you think got put into stockings?
A week after Christmas is not a big buying time. That's because people have spent the weeks before spending a ton on presents for Christmas. And this year, they had to spend more than last year for the same results since the stores gave such sucky sales.
So this is on them. They got greedy and they even closed early. What the heck was that?
Nine o'clock on Christmas Eve is not late. Every Christmas for most of my adult life I've had to take a Christmas job on top of my regular job (eight kids, remember). And Christmas Eve was a shift I worked. We got out at nine at the earliest. In Boston, you had places closing at five and six p.m. Monday evening. What the heck was that? Talk about destroying your sales. (Toys R Us did stay open late, to their credit.)
They brought it on themselves.
