Trade union leaders met Tuesday with President Barack Obama to give their support to his plans for massive cuts in social programs upon which tens of millions of workers depend.
The hour-long, closed-door meeting at the White House was the first act in a carefully orchestrated campaign to convince the public that unprecedented cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps and other welfare programs are the only alternative to economic disaster in the form of the so-called “fiscal cliff.”
The task assigned to the union chiefs is to counter broad popular opposition to the cuts by promoting the White House claim that it is pursuing a “balanced” approach to deficit-reduction, combining spending cuts with increased taxes on the rich.
I am disgusted with the unions. Membership should turn on all union leaders and Americans should grasp that the unions once fought for a safety net. Now the unions gladly work to undermine the rights of workers.
There is no "fiscal cliff." If you don't believe me, read Patrick Martin:
The main purpose of the media propaganda about the impending “cliff” is to create a sense of financial emergency and override popular opposition to measures the Obama administration and congressional Democrats and Republicans will put forward to avert it, including sweeping cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
This is a creation of Congress. They needed to create a 'crisis' to sell this attack on the people. And that's what they've done.
Call it out. As my son blogged Monday night, tell Barack, "Jump off the cliff!" This is propaganda meant to frighten us and make us think there is a crisis and so we all have to lose out.
It's a lie. It's a grand scheme to begin the destruction of Social Security.
If we lose it, it's lost. We obviously will not see another FDR in the Democratic Party. So we eighter fight for it right now, or we accept that we will lose Social Security for good.
