| 2 tablespoons | butter |
| 1 | onion (diced) |
| 1 pinch | seasoned salt (or to taste) |
| 6 | thin bone-in pork (chops) |
| 1 (14 ounce) can | beef consomme |
| 10 fluid ounces | water |
| 1 ½ cups | white rice |
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; cook and stir onion until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer onion to a plate.
- Sprinkle seasoned salt over all sides of each pork chop. Place pork chops in the same large skillet and cook until browned, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
- Mix beef consomme and water together in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour rice into the broth mixture; add caramelized onion. Gently arrange pork chops over rice in a single layer. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake in the preheated oven until pork is cooked through, 45 to 60 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C).
A few thoughts. If caramelized onions scare you, just use diced or chopped onions and add some green beans to the rice -- you'll have rice and onions and green beans with the pork chops. Second, I use brown rice. Remember the foil!!! There's nothing worse than getting a dish like this together and reaching for the foil to find out you only have a one inch strip left. If you're not sure, buy some foil while you're at the grocery store. Better to have an extra unopened box of foil than to need it once you get home and have to get back out again.

Both the Democrats and Republicans bemoan the high cost of health care in America. But the reality is that the high cost of health care—Americans pay on average $10,000 per person, per year—is not the result of actual spending on health care for workers and their families for vital treatments. It is because the US leaves the vast majority of pricing for drugs, procedures and hospital stays in the hands of the private sector. While hospitals and drug companies charge outrageous prices, millions of people remain uninsured and untreated.
For the ruling class, the increasing number of deaths of working men, women and youth is a “cost of doing business.” Indeed, it is seen as a positive good, as early deaths mean fewer costs associated with caring for the elderly—and more resources to pump into the stock market.

Reality's apparently too much for some people -- even too much for some 'news' outlets. THE GUARDIAN, for example, offers "Al-Hudood: the Onion-style website poking fun at the Middle East" this morning. Because we haven't been entertained enough in our lives? Because things are so wonderful in Iraq that we need chuckles? Because THE GUARDIAN's done some hard hitting reporting on Iraq all week (it hasn't) and now needs a moment of rest?
No, because the rule of the day is always distraction.
