The Jane Addams Hull House Association, one of the largest non-profit social service organizations in Chicago, abruptly shut down on Friday, January 27th. On January 19, the organization announced that funding difficulties would force it to close in spring 2012. Three hundred staff members were given layoff notices and a final paycheck on the day of the abrupt closure. That's so sad. When I was a kid, one of our first trips (or the first that I remember) was to Chicago which seemed like such a huge deal. Not only was it another city, but it was out of our state. Oooooh. Exotic.
And the second place we went to in Chicago as the Jane Addams Hull House. (We went to the baseball field first.) I did not know who she was but knew my father was excited as he told me about her and her work (my father is a Socialist, he considered Jane Adams to be a near saint).
